Why XDM needs both an app and an extension

The desktop application manages transfers. The browser extension recognizes eligible links and media requests, then passes download information to the running application. Installing the extension alone does not provide the full download engine.

XDM supports Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and compatible Chromium or Firefox-derived browsers. Extension availability can vary by browser-store review and software release, so use a verified source or the setup link inside XDM.

Note

The XDM browser helper communicates with a local application service; it should not need to send personal files to an unrelated cloud service.

Set up the extension

  1. Launch the XDM desktop application first.
  2. Open its browser-integration setup or Browser settings.
  3. Select your browser and follow the verified extension link; review the extension permissions before installing.
  4. Enable the extension in the browser and pin its toolbar icon if you want quick media access.
  5. Test with a permitted direct-download file and confirm XDM receives the transfer.

Choose which downloads are intercepted

Depending on the application build, integration settings can filter extensions, domains and file types. Use these controls to let XDM capture installers, archives or large media files while leaving small browser downloads alone.

A site can generate temporary authenticated download links. In that case, the extension may need the same cookie or request details your browser used to access the file. Do not paste session cookies into public support messages.

  • Keep the desktop app running.
  • Ensure the browser extension version is compatible with your XDM build.
  • Check that the website permits the requested file download.

Why the extension might stop working

Browsers update frequently, and an extension may need permissions or an update after a browser change. If capture fails, open the browser's extension manager, confirm that XDM is enabled, and restart both the app and browser.

If a direct link works in XDM but handoff fails, the problem is more likely the extension or local integration than the download server. If neither method works, check the file URL and network restrictions.

  • Check disabled or duplicate XDM extensions.
  • Verify browser site permissions.
  • Avoid installing multiple old and new integration modules at once.

Privacy and website access

Review requested permissions and the store listing carefully. Browser integration can require access to the page's download requests, so restrict permissions when your browser offers site-specific controls. Keep the browser and extension updated and remove extensions that no longer match your installed XDM version.

Common questions

Does XDM work with Brave?

XDM supports compatible Chromium browsers such as Brave, subject to extension availability and the current browser configuration.

Why do files still download in the browser?

Confirm the XDM app is running, its extension is enabled, and the relevant file type or site is permitted in capture settings.
