XDM Not Working? Download and Browser Fixes
Use a structured set of checks to identify whether an XDM problem comes from the app, browser integration, server or operating system.
Start with three checks
Before changing settings, record your XDM version, operating system and browser version. Then test with one known-permitted small direct-download file. This gives you a repeatable baseline instead of changing several variables at the same time.
If downloads work when you paste the file URL into XDM but not when you click it in the browser, focus on browser integration. If both fail, check the URL, authentication, network access and the remote server.
- Confirm the app actually opens and stays running.
- Verify the current installer and extension came from trusted sources.
- Save the exact error message without sharing private URLs.
Browser downloads are not intercepted
- Open the browser extension manager and make sure the XDM integration extension is enabled.
- Check that XDM is running, not just installed.
- Review capture preferences or excluded file types and sites in XDM.
- Update the app and extension to compatible versions if updates are available.
- Restart the browser and XDM, then retry a small file.
File fails, pauses or shows HTTP 401/403
The file link may require an active login or might have expired. Sign in at the source site, obtain a new authorized link and try XDM's Refresh link function when available. Some servers intentionally reject segmented downloading or do not support resume.
If one server fails but another trusted mirror succeeds, the source server may be the bottleneck. Avoid repeatedly hammering a rate-limited server with more connections.
- Check destination-drive free space and file permissions.
- Reduce parallel connections if the host rejects them.
- Keep partial download files until recovery is no longer needed.
Video is missing from the extension
Play the video to allow the page to load its actual stream, then check the XDM extension. DRM-protected media and unsupported streaming services will not appear as downloadable streams. For example, the upstream project does not claim XDM 9 captures YouTube media.
If the extension cannot even capture a direct file, repair that connection before investigating video detection.
App will not install or launch
Confirm that the package matches your OS and processor, and check whether it is a stable release or a pre-release. On macOS, follow supported Gatekeeper checks after verifying the file. On Linux, use the documented package for your distribution. On Windows, inspect any installer warning carefully rather than suppressing security protections.
- Avoid installing multiple conflicting versions in parallel.
- Check the publisher’s known-issues or release-notes page.
- Report reproducible crashes with the affected app version and environment.
XDM 8 to 9 upgrade caused missing settings
The XDM 9 rebuilt application may not import XDM 8 settings or the older download list. If you have not migrated yet, finish active transfers and record settings first. If you already upgraded, do not erase the previous app-data folder before investigating your options.
Common questions
Why does XDM not detect my browser downloads?
Usually the desktop app, browser extension or capture permissions need attention. Test a small direct file to locate the cause.
Why is my XDM 8 download list missing in XDM 9?
The rebuilt XDM 9 application uses a different data layout and does not automatically import all old downloads or preferences.
