How to Install XDM on Windows 10 and 11

Choose a Windows build, complete installation and connect XDM to your browser without losing sight of version differences.

Choose between stable XDM 8 and the XDM 9 pre-release

XDM 9 introduces a redesigned application and newer download features, but it is still labelled a pre-release. XDM 8.0.29 remains the stable choice for users who prefer an established version. Before downloading, review the release label and supported Windows architecture on the project's download page.

On a Windows PC, open Settings → System → About and read System type. Most machines use x64; some newer laptops use ARM64. Choose an installer that explicitly supports your system rather than assuming an x64 installer is compatible with every device.

Note

Installer links and release availability may change. Confirm the chosen file and version on the release page before running it.

Install the selected package

  1. Save the installer from a verified project release and check the version and architecture shown on its download page.
  2. Close XDM if an older copy is already running. Allow any active downloads to finish first.
  3. Open the MSI installer and follow the prompts. Check the publisher, filename and download source before approving an operating-system warning.
  4. Launch XDM from the Start menu and confirm the main window opens.
  5. If a browser-integration setup window appears, follow it to install the extension for each browser you use.

Connect a browser and test a small download

Keep XDM running while you test integration. Install the matching browser extension from a verified store or the application's setup link, review its permissions, then try a permitted file from a trustworthy website. You should see the transfer appear in XDM rather than only in the browser's native download list.

If downloads stay in the browser, check that the extension is enabled, that the XDM application is running, and that its browser-capture settings include the file type or site.

  • The app and extension must be compatible with each other.
  • Use a trusted small file for the first functional test.
  • A browser extension cannot guarantee interception on every website.

Upgrading from XDM 8

XDM 9 uses a different application-data layout from XDM 8 and does not reliably import the older download list or preferences. Record important links and settings before you switch versions; finish critical transfers where possible.

A Microsoft Store installation of XDM 8 can require separate removal before installing a standalone XDM 9 package. Follow the actual installer prompts rather than deleting files manually.

Note

Never delete unfinished download data unless you have an independent copy of the files or know you no longer need them.

If Windows blocks installation

Security warnings are not proof that a file is malicious, but they are not a reason to bypass protection automatically. Confirm that the download came from the correct upstream release, compare any published checksums, and scan the file. If verification is uncertain, do not proceed; ask the upstream project for help.

  • Do not download repackaged installers from unknown mirrors.
  • Do not disable Microsoft Defender or your firewall to make the installer run.

Common questions

Does XDM 9 require a separate Java installation?

The official XDM 9 Windows packages are intended to include their runtime; verify the requirements for the exact package you choose.

Will upgrading from XDM 8 keep unfinished downloads?

Do not count on automatic migration. Finish or record unfinished transfers and save important settings before upgrading.

Version reminder

XDM 9 is a pre-release. Some announced packages are not available for every platform yet. Review the latest upstream project files before upgrading.
