How to Install XDM on Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch Linux
Choose a Linux package that matches your distribution and architecture, then set up downloads and browser integration.
Choose a version that is actually available
The upstream project offers XDM 8.0.29 as a stable Linux build. XDM 9 Linux packages have been advertised as part of the pre-release rollout, but some are marked coming soon. If a desired XDM 9 package is not yet offered, do not substitute a random third-party file.
Check your machine's architecture with the command below. An x86_64 result corresponds to an x86-64 or amd64 package; aarch64 normally corresponds to ARM64. Package availability and desktop requirements depend on the actual release.
uname -mMatch the package to your distribution
Choose .deb for Debian-based distributions, .rpm for Fedora-family distributions when supported, a .pkg.tar.zst archive for Arch-based distributions, or the publisher's tar.gz archive when it is offered and documented.
- Ubuntu, Debian, Mint: prefer the published .deb package.
- Fedora and other supported RPM distributions: use the published .rpm package.
- Arch and Manjaro: use the published Arch package format.
- Other distributions: check whether a compatible archive or source build is officially supported.
Install the downloaded package
- Download the official file that matches your distribution and architecture.
- Open a terminal in the folder containing the downloaded package.
- Choose the correct command for your package format, substituting the actual filename.
- Launch XDM from your applications menu and confirm the app opens.
- Connect the browser extension using XDM’s setup instructions.
sudo apt install ./package-name.deb
# Fedora-family systems (where supported):
sudo dnf install ./package-name.rpm
# Arch-family systems:
sudo pacman -U ./package-name.pkg.tar.zstKnow what changes when upgrading from XDM 8
The newer XDM 9 Linux package uses a different package name and data location from older XDM 8 installations. Installation may replace an older package, but the prior download list and settings should not be assumed to migrate.
Before upgrading, let active downloads finish, note the download directory and any network/proxy preferences, and save links you might need again.
Fix desktop and tray integration
Desktop environments differ in how they show background applications. If the app launches but no tray icon appears, check your desktop's tray/AppIndicator support. On Wayland systems, rendering and scaling behavior can differ from X11. Use the application's documented settings if you encounter display issues rather than changing unrelated system configuration.
Common questions
Is XDM 9 available for every Linux distribution?
Not necessarily. Check the upstream download page; some announced XDM 9 Linux packages may still be marked coming soon.
What does aarch64 mean?
It identifies an ARM64 Linux architecture. You need a release that explicitly provides ARM64 support.
