Resume Interrupted or Expired XDM Downloads

Understand the difference between a lost connection and an expired URL, and recover transfers when the server supports resuming.

Why a download stops

Downloads can fail after power loss, Wi-Fi interruptions, an application crash or an authentication timeout. A paused or interrupted transfer is not necessarily lost; XDM may keep the partial file and resume it when the source server supports range requests.

A resume option can still fail when the remote file has changed, the server does not allow partial requests, or the session used to generate the link has expired.

Note

Do not assume all downloads can resume. Always protect the partially downloaded data until recovery is confirmed.

First try normal resume

  1. Restore network connectivity and reopen XDM.
  2. Locate the paused or failed item in the transfer list.
  3. Choose Resume or Retry using the controls available in your XDM version.
  4. Check whether the transfer continues from its previous progress or returns a server error.
  5. If the URL has expired, use the refresh-link flow below rather than deleting the download.

Refresh an expired link

A 401 or 403 error can mean the original URL was tied to a short-lived login session or signed token. When available, XDM's Refresh link feature can replace the expired address while retaining partial data for the same file.

Return to the original website and generate a new authorized link for exactly the same file. Follow the XDM refresh dialog to connect that new link to the existing transfer. Changing to a different file or version could make the resumed output unusable.

  • Sign in again only through the original website.
  • Use the identical file and quality/format if recovering a media transfer.
  • Do not share authentication tokens, cookies or private URLs with public troubleshooting forums.

When starting again is necessary

If the server refuses range requests, the remote file has been replaced, or the downloaded parts cannot be matched to the new resource, a restart may be required. Downloading from a different URL is not enough unless the bytes represent the same file.

Note

Back up partial files if they are important before attempting destructive cleanup.

Prevent repeated failures

Use a stable network for large files, keep enough free disk space for temporary chunks and final files, and review your system's sleep settings for long transfers. A schedule or queue can reduce the number of active downloads on a constrained connection.

Common questions

Can XDM resume after a power cut?

Often, if partial data remains intact and the server supports resuming the same file.

What does a 403 error mean when resuming?

It can indicate an expired or unauthorized download link. Reauthenticate and use the app’s Refresh link flow if supported.
