Understand streaming formats before downloading

Many websites deliver media as short chunks instead of a single MP4 file. HLS commonly uses .m3u8 playlists, while MPEG-DASH uses .mpd manifests. Video and audio may arrive separately and must be combined to create a playable output.

XDM 9 supports compatible HLS and DASH downloads and can combine supported audio/video components. It does not mean every playable video is downloadable or that copyright and site restrictions no longer apply.

Note

Download only media you own or have permission to save. XDM does not bypass DRM or access restrictions.

Capture a permitted video in your browser

  1. Start XDM and confirm the matching browser extension is enabled.
  2. Open a webpage where you are permitted to download the video.
  3. Play the content briefly so the page requests a media stream.
  4. Open the XDM extension menu and review any formats or qualities it detects.
  5. Choose an available permitted stream and let XDM finish both transfer and any supported merging step.

Choose an appropriate quality

A higher listed resolution can produce a much larger file and longer transfer time. Choose based on your available disk space, device capabilities and the quality the website actually offers. Some sites provide only certain combinations of video and audio formats.

If playback fails after a transfer, check whether merging finished and whether your player supports the resulting codecs. A completed network transfer does not always mean the output is ready to play.

  • Check free storage before saving long videos.
  • Wait for post-processing to complete when audio and video are separate.
  • Do not rename a playlist file to .mp4 and expect it to become a video.

Why some sites or streams do not work

A protected stream may use digital rights management, temporary credentials or formats unsupported by the current release. XDM is not a DRM bypass tool; its support also varies by website. The upstream XDM project specifically says YouTube capture is not supported in its XDM 9 video guide.

If the extension finds no permitted stream, confirm that browser integration works on a direct download first. That separates extension-connection problems from unsupported media detection.

Note

Do not treat inaccessible or DRM-protected content as an error that needs security controls disabled.

Advanced playlists and privacy

Some builds allow advanced users to provide a manifest URL and required headers for an authorized stream. Treat tokens, cookies and private URLs as sensitive credentials and avoid pasting them into public tickets, screenshots or third-party download sites.

Common questions

Can XDM download every streaming video?

No. Support varies by website and format. DRM-protected streams and unsupported services cannot be captured with XDM.

What are HLS and DASH?

They are adaptive streaming formats that often distribute audio and video as many small segments rather than one media file.
