When to use a batch instead of individual downloads

Batch downloading helps when you need many authorized files from a page or a pasted list of links. Rather than managing every transfer separately, you can review a group, choose a destination and allow XDM to process files systematically.

Check the file list before beginning. Some webpages contain tracking URLs, sign-out links or resources that are not intended as downloads, so capturing every link without review is rarely a good default.

Note

Only add URLs you are entitled to retrieve, and obey any server limits or terms of access.

Prepare a clean batch

  1. Collect only the direct links you want to download.
  2. Open the XDM batch or add-links workflow available in your release.
  3. Paste your list or select the specific page links you want.
  4. Review filenames, destinations and any duplicate entries.
  5. Start the batch with a modest number of simultaneous transfers.

Use queues to control bandwidth

A queue can help prevent several large files from saturating the same internet connection at once. It is especially useful for slower links, busy shared networks and long-running download tasks.

Set a sensible active-download limit, then use a speed cap if other applications need responsive access to the network. Increasing the number of active files does not create extra bandwidth; it divides the available capacity.

  • Prioritize urgent files first when your version supports reordering.
  • Separate important work downloads from optional media transfers.
  • Check the available storage space before starting a large queue.

Scheduling and completion actions

Supported XDM versions can start or stop queues on a schedule and may offer actions when work completes. Review the exact wording in your installed release before relying on unattended actions such as shutdown or staying awake.

Do a short trial run before leaving a machine unattended. Scheduled tasks still depend on network connectivity, valid download links, available storage and the device remaining powered on.

Note

Do not assume a schedule can revive expired session links or automatically bypass website login requirements.

Review the results

Once a batch completes, check the file list for failures, duplicate names and unexpected formats. Retry only the failed items where permitted and avoid automatically repeating requests to a server that is returning rate-limit errors.

Common questions

Does a larger batch download faster?

Not necessarily. Many active transfers share one internet connection and can compete for bandwidth.

Can scheduled downloads run when the PC is shut down?

No. A normal desktop download manager requires the machine and application to be running at the scheduled time.
